Energy Advocates are people who are passionate about reducing residential energy use in Corvallis. We welcome all skill levels from energy novices to engineers.
The Energy Advocate class prepares volunteers to provide follow-up assistance for residents who receive a Home Energy Review from Energy Trust of Oregon. Topics include weatherization, water heating, space heating, efficient appliances, windows, and solar energy. The course also includes detailed information about funding options including the Corvallis Revolving Loan Fund, Federal and State Tax Credits, Corvallis Weatherization Incentive Program, and Energy Trust of Oregon incentives. Each class includes a “How to Talk to Strangers” session that prepares volunteers to talk with residents about home energy efficiency.
After the class, Energy Advocates work one-on-one with residents to help them make informed decisions about home efficiency, prioritize projects, identify funding, and find the right contractors. Energy Advocates receive 40 hours of training throughout the year and are asked to volunteer an equal amount of time assisting residents. Energy Advocates will be paired up with residents and help them move forward with their energy efficiency projects. Advocates can complete their volunteer time on their own schedule from home or at our office.
After the five-week course, Energy Advocates meet once a month to deepen their understanding of energy efficiency. Monthly gatherings often include guest speakers such as specialists in solar hot water, heat pumps, weatherization, and energy efficiency financing, and help to build community amongst the other Advocates.
