Aryna Sabalenka: Świątek Would Have Taken the Trophy at Roland Garros Final

Sport news

World number one Aryna Sabalenka believes Iga Świątek would have won the `Roland Garros` final against Coco Gauff. Sabalenka defeated Świątek 7/6(1), 4/6, 6/0 in the semi-finals but then lost to Gauff 7/6(3), 2/6, 4/6 in the final. Świątek is a four-time French Open champion.

– Is such a loss harder because it`s a Grand Slam final?

– Yes, it hurts. Especially after playing so well throughout the tournament, against very tough opponents like the Olympic champion [Zheng Qinwen] and Iga [Świątek]. Then you step onto the court for the final and play like that.

I believe if Iga had defeated me [in the semi-final], she would have gone out there today and won the trophy. So yes, it`s painful. It really is. I played exceptionally well in the tournament, only for the deciding match to turn out this way. It hurts.
