Gearbox Software has commenced the unveiling of the playable characters destined for the upcoming looter-shooter sequel, Borderlands 4, slated for a September release. The first Vault Hunter introduced to prospective players is Vex, a new Siren whose formidable abilities manifested during a rather inopportune and high-stress moment.
Sirens are an exceptionally rare class of individuals within the Borderlands universe, identifiable by their distinctive tattoos and capacity to wield extraordinary, often reality-altering powers. Vex adheres to the core definition of a Siren but diverges significantly from previous iterations by specializing in the summoning and command of minions. This firmly plants her gameplay style in the realm of a necromancer or `pet class.`
A significant portion of Vex`s combat efficacy appears to revolve around a specific companion: a large alien cat known as Trouble. One of Vex`s skill trees is dedicated exclusively to enhancing and utilizing this feline ally. Players can summon Trouble into the fray, strategically teleport it across the battlefield, and modify its behavior and effectiveness. Augments can turn Trouble into a resilient tank capable of drawing enemy fire, or, perhaps more entertainingly, allow it to detonate in a shower of violent catharsis.
Beyond her unique minion focus, Vex possesses a suite of other classic Siren abilities. Her repertoire includes the capacity to unleash a focused blast of phase energy, temporarily gain flight through the manifestation of spectral wings, deploy a small, autonomous offensive orb or turret, and deliver forceful projectiles directly from her hand. For her third available Action Skill, players can choose between summoning ethereal copies of herself for ranged suppressive fire or manifesting a psychic reaper suitable for engaging enemies at close range.
Further insight into Vex`s origins was recently provided through an animated short titled “Purple Friday.” True to Borderlands form, the short is graphic, action-packed, and laced with the series` signature irreverent humor. It chronicles the chaotic moment Vex`s powers spontaneously ignited while she was simply trying to navigate a retail job. The narrative manages to weave in elements of romance, confrontational customer service (a perennial favorite), and even includes a meta-commentary piece that eagle-eyed fans might interpret as a jab at a previous game in the franchise. It serves as a concise, bloody, and amusing peek into both Vex`s character and the world she inhabits.
The reveal of Vex and her unique capabilities marks the beginning of Gearbox`s showcase for Borderlands 4`s new crew. Fans can expect further details on the remaining playable Vault Hunters in the lead-up to launch. Borderlands 4 is scheduled to be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC starting September 12th. A version for the Nintendo Switch 2 is anticipated later in 2025.
