Coco Gauff on Comeback Against Andreeva: ‘I Didn’t Change Anything, She Just Started Making More Mistakes’

World No. 4 Coco Gauff commented on her victory over fellow player Mirra Andreeva in the quarter-finals of the Madrid Open. Gauff secured her spot in the next round with a score of 7/5, 6/1.

“I`m pleased with the win and satisfied with my performance,” Gauff stated, according to the WTA press service. “The first set was challenging and full of tension. Andreeva is a gifted young tennis player, and I`m certain we will compete in many more memorable matches.”

The American player also elaborated on the key moment that shifted the momentum of the match against Andreeva.

Question: What specifically changed in the match after you were down 4-5, facing 15:40 and two set points in the first set, only to save them and then win eight consecutive games?

Gauff: “Honestly, I didn`t alter my game plan at all during the match. I had opportunities for break points even before that sequence; had I converted one earlier, perhaps I would have been serving for the set myself at that point. Yes, she began making more errors, but I maintained the exact same approach. More rallies simply started concluding in my favor. The reason I didn`t change anything was because I felt I was doing a lot of things correctly from the outset; Mirra was just executing well with aces and excellent drop shots,” Gauff explained during her press conference.
