Last night, all eyes in the boxing world were on Madison Square Garden for an event led by Irish fighters, with ‘King’ Callum Walsh as the main attraction.
Callum Walsh achieved a powerful first-round knockout in the main event. However, another unexpected stoppage in New York City also grabbed headlines.
Heavyweight prospect Thomas Carty, who was promised his American debut by Dana White in September, experienced his first professional defeat. He was forced to take a knee during his fight against a much larger opponent.
Huge Favorite Thomas Carty Suffers Shock Upset Due to Injury Against 400lb Opponent
Thomas ‘The Bomber’ Carty entered his American debut as a massive favorite. A significant 98% of Tapology Community Picks predicted a win for him, with 93% expecting a knockout.
However, in the second round, with about a minute remaining in his fight against Dajuan ‘The Punisher’ Calloway, who was over 150lbs heavier, Carty unexpectedly fell to the ground.
Carty showed clear pain as he struggled to stand, limping to his corner and informing the referee he could continue.
“His knee gave way, he’s badly hurt,” commentators noted as the fight resumed, though cautiously, as it became evident Carty had injured his knee.
Just 10 seconds later, ‘The Bomber’ went down for a second time while trying to move around his 400+lb opponent.
Carty fell for a third time right as the bell rang.
Between rounds, Carty’s team stopped the fight.
“They’ve stopped it, it will be a TKO victory for Dajuan Calloway… Not the start to his American journey Thomas Carty wanted, and not how Calloway expected to win.”
Thomas Carty’s undefeated record ends at 10-1, while Calloway’s record improves to 11-3.
