UFC legend Daniel Cormier is confident that Dana White`s entry into boxing will make the sport`s biggest potential super-fight, involving Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford, even larger.
The UFC president is set to launch TKO Boxing alongside Turki Alalshikh, with their debut event scheduled for September 12th in Las Vegas. This event will feature the highly anticipated clash between Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford at the Allegiant Stadium, a matchup between two of boxing`s top pound-for-pound fighters.
The announcement regarding White`s new boxing venture and the fight was made via social media after Canelo and Crawford had a face-off in Saudi Arabia recently. Notably, White is also promoting a major UFC event, UFC 320, set to take place in Guadalajara the day after the boxing match.
Daniel Cormier Predicts Increased Interest Due to Dana White`s Promotion
One prominent figure who holds strong loyalty to Dana White is Daniel Cormier, a former two-division UFC champion and current popular commentator for the organization.
Cormier expressed his support for White`s expansion into boxing, stating in a new YouTube video that his boss introduces a fresh dynamic to what is already considered the most exciting fight globally. “They’re two of the best boxers in the world,” Cormier commented on his YouTube channel. “They’re not over the hill at all. These are phenomenal fighters. They’re both still in their prime.” He highlighted that their age range (30-35) is typical for an athletic prime, unlike the current UFC landscape where few male champions are under 30.
While acknowledging the fight might have had slightly more buzz a couple of years ago before Canelo`s most recent performance, Cormier firmly believes that Dana White`s promotional capabilities will “bring a different level of interest.” He also added a personal note, wishing he could have seen Canelo compete when he was at a slightly smaller weight class years prior.
Mixed Reactions from Boxing Fans Regarding White`s Entry
However, Daniel Cormier`s optimistic view isn`t shared by everyone within the boxing community. Dana White`s tight control over the UFC, including his controversial approaches to fighter compensation and other business practices, are not as well-received by some boxing fans who have different expectations for the sport`s structure.
Online reactions to White`s involvement included negative sentiment. One fan simply commented, “Disgusting.” Another questioned, “FFS. Why involve Dana White? He’s not needed! Stick to UFC.” Concerns were also raised about potential scheduling issues: “If this fight is on a Friday because there’s a UFC card on Saturday that’ll truly p— me off ngl lol,” a third fan wrote, while a fourth asked, “What are you doing getting that c— Dana White involved for?”
