Daniel Altmaier on Sinner’s Doping Scandal: ‘Probably an Accident’

Sport news

World No. 82 Daniel Altmaier believes that Jannik Sinner is not guilty of violating anti-doping rules. The Italian player was previously disqualified for three months for clostebol, but will be able to return to the Tour at the Rome Masters in May.

Altmaier said: `I spoke with Jannik personally, and he doesn`t seem like a guy who would intentionally violate anything. It was probably an accident. I think that many athletes caught in doping cases find themselves in such a situation by accident. I find it hard to believe that many tennis players deliberately take doping.

Sometimes you`re just unlucky. But it`s important that everyone is treated fairly, regardless of their ranking – whether they are 100th or 1000th. This rule must be inviolable. I understand the disappointment of many. But in Sinner`s case, I repeat, I don`t think he acted intentionally.`
