Djokovic Becomes Oldest Roland Garros Quarterfinalist Since 1971

Sport news

Twenty-four-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic has set a new historical mark at Roland Garros, becoming the oldest male player to reach the quarterfinals since Hungarian Istvan Gulyas achieved the feat in 1971.

Djokovic celebrated his 38th birthday on May 22nd. Gulyas was 39 years old when he reached the quarterfinals in 1971, a record Djokovic now approaches at a similar age.

In the fourth round of Roland Garros 2025, Djokovic defeated Great Britain`s Cameron Norrie, ranked World No. 81, in straight sets with a score of 6/2, 6/3, 6/2. This victory marked Djokovic`s 100th career match win at Roland Garros. He is only the second player in history to reach this milestone on the clay courts of Paris, the first being 22-time major winner Rafael Nadal, who finished his career with 112 victories at the clay-court Grand Slam.

Djokovic holds the all-time record for the most Grand Slam quarterfinal appearances. His progression to the last eight at Roland Garros 2025 extends his record to 62 career quarterfinal berths at major tournaments. Roger Federer is second on this distinguished list with 58 quarterfinal appearances, followed by Rafael Nadal in third with 47.

Djokovic`s next challenge in Paris will be against Germany`s Alexander Zverev, the World No. 3 and 2020 Olympic gold medalist.
