In the competitive world of professional basketball, where dreams are often as boundless as a court`s length, 21-year-old Saliou Niang stands out. With eyes that mirror his deep-seated ambition, Niang, the burgeoning forward for Virtus Bologna, articulated a clear vision during a recent EuroLeague media day: to conquer the highest echelons of European basketball while keeping an unwavering gaze on the ultimate prize – the NBA.
Niang isn`t just another talent; he`s the embodiment of Italy`s rising basketball prowess. His electrifying presence was first truly felt this past summer during Eurobasket, where his explosive energy became a game-changer. “The European Championship definitely gave me more grit, more desire to improve,” Niang recounted. “It was a fantastic experience. I`m happy with how I played and how I got along with the national team and my teammates. This pushes me to give even more here at Virtus.”
A Dual Horizon: Virtus Trophies and the NBA Draft Call
Selected as the 58th pick in the NBA Draft by the Cleveland Cavaliers, Niang carries the quiet confidence of someone who understands the stakes. Yet, his commitment to his current club is paramount. “With Virtus, I want the maximum,” he declared. “Win as many trophies as possible. I`m here to give everything.” This mantra of “giving everything” isn`t just rhetoric; it`s the core of his approach, both on and off the court. Despite the gentle smile he offered during the photo shoot, there`s a lethal competitive spirit beneath the surface.
His first exposure to the American basketball landscape left a profound impression. “I had never been to America in my life, and I was truly surprised by the way they treat sports, especially basketball. The organization and attention are incredible.” While the siren song of the NBA is undeniably strong, Niang is pragmatic. “I think about the NBA, yes. But now I want to do my utmost for Virtus.”

The Battles Ahead: Milano, EuroLeague, and Team Harmony
The Italian league promises another gripping season, with Virtus expected to resume its storied rivalry with Olimpia Milano. Niang anticipates the challenge with relish. “Virtus and Milano have been the two strongest teams in Italy for several years. We must always play with grit, as a team. I don`t know what it will be like to face Milano in a Virtus jersey, but it will certainly be very beautiful and exciting.”
The EuroLeague, too, looms large – a “very difficult competition,” as he noted. “We will try to give our best; it is decisive in such competitions. It`s a long journey with many games. But if we stay united, we can do our best. Where we will arrive, we will see along the way.” This measured optimism speaks volumes about his realistic yet determined outlook.

Mentors and Mates: The “Blue Harmony”
Niang finds himself in an environment conducive to growth. He expressed admiration for Virtus coach Ivanovic: “Excellent. He didn`t make many specific requests; he just explained the plays, how to be better on the court, helped me understand my role. I`m happy to play for him.”
His relationship with national team coach Gianmarco Pozzecco is equally significant, described by Niang as “almost a friend.”
“He gave me confidence; he`s a great person, someone I joke with a lot off the court. He gave me so much, he trusted me, and obviously, I can only be grateful to him. It wasn`t a given. I wish him the best.”
This bond extends to his Virtus teammates who also play for the Italian national team – Pajola, Akele, Diouf. “We gelled well in the national team. Now we want to bring this harmony to the Virtus season. Even outside the gym, beautiful friendships have been born; I feel good with them.” This collective spirit, often underestimated, can be the hidden ingredient for success.
A Journey of Growth: From Fortitudo to Virtus
Niang’s connection to Bologna runs deeper than his current contract. He reminisced about his early days: “When I was little and part of the Fortitudo youth academy, I used to go to PalaDozza even just as a spectator: I remember always breathing an incredible atmosphere.” His two years in Trento were pivotal, providing the right environment for personal development. “I wasn`t coming from an easy situation, but I found the right people at the right time in my life. Now I`m happy to be at Virtus. I have grown, and I want to continue to do so.”
Looking ahead, he acknowledges the high expectations surrounding Virtus. “It won`t be easy. For me, the level has risen a lot. And that makes every game complicated, difficult. There are many expectations, I know that well. But already in these days, since I arrived, I have understood that all the goals are important.”
A Promise to the Fans
To the passionate Virtus fans, Niang offers a simple, yet powerful promise: “I will always give my best for this jersey. This is one thing I can say. Bologna is a city I like. Off the court, I`m a perfectly normal guy, like everyone else.” He anticipates a raucous welcome. “I expect great support; I`m sure they will welcome me well. It has already happened. I am very charged, I can`t wait.”
The dream of the NBA is a constant companion, a beacon on the distant horizon. “I fully understood that`s where I want to play. My big dream to try to achieve. I always think about the NBA, yes. But now I`m here at Virtus; I want to do my utmost for this jersey. Then we`ll see what happens.”
Saliou Niang`s story is one of unwavering dedication, strategic ambition, and profound gratitude. He is a young athlete living in the present, committed to the collective success of Virtus Bologna, while his sights remain firmly set on a future among basketball`s elite. The journey is long, but Niang appears ready for every step, every challenge, and every triumph.
