French central defender Lucas Perrin is set for a new chapter in his career, trading German football for the Spanish challenge. The 26-year-old has completed a permanent transfer from Hamburger SV to Sporting Gijón, a prominent club in Spain`s Segunda División.
The move was officially confirmed on Wednesday, July 2nd, marking another step in Perrin`s journey away from his native France. He initially joined Hamburger SV last summer, making it his first professional stint outside of French football. However, his time in Germany proved brief in terms of appearances, with the defender featuring in just six matches, starting two, during the first half of the season.
Seeking more consistent playing time, Perrin spent the latter half of the previous campaign on loan at Belgian Pro League side Cercle Brugge. Now, the permanent switch to Sporting Gijón offers a fresh opportunity for the player to establish himself and contribute regularly in Spain`s competitive second tier.
Sporting Gijón are reportedly bolstering their defensive line with Perrin`s arrival as they prepare for the upcoming Segunda División season. The Asturian club, with its rich history in Spanish football, currently competes in the second division but harbours ambitions of returning to La Liga. Perrin will undoubtedly look to play a key role in their efforts to climb the table.
Hamburger SV`s Technical Director, Claus Costa, commented on Perrin`s departure, acknowledging his contribution during his spell in Hamburg: “We thank Lucas Perrin for his commitment during his time at HSV and wish him all the best for this new adventure in Spain.”
For Perrin, the focus will undoubtedly be on finding the continuity and form that perhaps eluded him during his full season under contract with Hamburg. Joining a historic Spanish club with clear objectives presents an ideal platform for the defender to reignite his career and secure regular minutes on the pitch.
