Gary Lineker has issued a full and unreserved apology following controversy over an Instagram post that compared supporters of Israel to rats.

The post, shared by the popular presenter, ignited significant backlash and has since been removed from the platform.

The image of a rat is historically used as an anti-Semitic slur, notably employed by Nazi Germany to dehumanize Jewish people.

The offensive imagery appeared alongside a video featuring a Canadian-Palestinian lawyer criticizing the conflict in Gaza, captioned “Zionism explained in two minutes.”

In a formal statement, Lineker explained: “I reposted material on Instagram which I later discovered contained offensive references.”

“I deeply regret these references.”

“I would never intentionally share anything antisemitic, as it contradicts all my personal beliefs.”

“The post was removed immediately once I became aware of its problematic nature.”

“While I firmly believe in the importance of highlighting humanitarian crises, such as the unfolding tragedy in Gaza, I recognize that the way we communicate these issues is crucial.”

“I accept full responsibility for this error. That specific image does not represent my personal views.”

“It was a mistake on my part, and for this, I offer my unreserved apology.”

When questioned about the controversy surrounding Lineker`s post, the Director General of the BBC stated that staff must adhere to the broadcaster`s social media guidelines.

Following a speech on topics including trust, disinformation, and impartiality, BBC Director General Tim Davie was asked if Lineker`s actions violated the BBC`s policies.

Speaking at The Lowry arts centre in Salford, Mr. Davie commented, “The reputation of the BBC is collectively held by everyone, and when an individual makes an error, it impacts us all.”

“It is essential that our personnel exemplify BBC values and strictly follow our social media policies. It`s as simple as that,” he added.

Lineker`s representative informed the BBC that the presenter promptly removed the post upon understanding the offensive symbolism of the image, which he had not recognized initially.

Lineker had been temporarily taken off air by the BBC in March 2023 following a dispute over impartiality, stemming from his comments criticizing the government`s asylum policy at the time.

Furthermore, he was one of 500 prominent individuals who signed an open letter in February, calling for the BBC to make the documentary “Gaza: How To Survive A War Zone” available on BBC iPlayer.

Last November, Lineker announced his decision to step down as the main presenter of Match Of The Day, although he will continue to host coverage for the World Cup and FA Cup.

He is also a co-founder of Goalhanger Podcasts, known for producing popular series such as “The Rest Is History” and other related podcasts covering politics, football, entertainment, and finance.
