Holger Rune: Coaching Changes Derailed Me, But I’m Back on Track

Sport news

Danish tennis player Holger Rune discussed his current form and his ambition to return to the top of men`s tennis.

“Two years ago, you were ranked fourth, and now you are 13th. What happened?”

“Rankings reflect your current level of play. I made mistakes, particularly with the frequent changes in my coaching team. However, I now have a clearer understanding of my approach, my positioning on the court, and my physical condition.”

“Did you become overconfident?”

“The changes threw me off course, and I became confused. Now, I feel like I`m back on the right path. To be at the top, you need to be precise in everything you do and avoid complacency.”

“Sinner and Alcaraz are ahead, you are slightly behind, and then Menšík and Fonseca are emerging…”

“Sinner and Alcaraz are already part of the elite, not just future prospects. I`ve played against them and believe I can compete at their level. Sinner is incredibly consistent, and so is Carlos, despite some criticism after losses. He is two years younger than Sinner but already has four Grand Slams – one more. Everyone can lose; we are human. Carlos deserves respect.”

“In childhood, you dreamed of becoming number one, and by 21, you were fourth. Did your dream come true even a little bit?”

“No. I achieved intermediate goals: the junior Roland Garros, leadership among my peers. But that`s not the main thing. My real goal is still ahead.”

“Which is?”

“To win a Grand Slam and become number one in the world. The most important thing is to keep dreaming,” Rune said in an interview.
