UFC fighter Ilia Topuria has confirmed that his previous disagreement with football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has been resolved, stating that the two are now “good”.
The featherweight champion had taken offense last October when Ronaldo suggested he “talked too much” and had not yet defeated a significant opponent prior to his scheduled fight.
Recalling his reaction at the time, Topuria had publicly responded by saying, “Cristiano, he always got something to say… We have Messi, Ronaldo can f**k himself.”
However, speaking recently, the Georgian-born Spaniard indicated that he no longer holds any ill will towards the legendary player.
During an interview at the UFC 317 media day, Topuria clarified the situation, stating, “Not at all, we`re [all] good.”
It appears a gesture of reconciliation occurred when the 40-year-old Ronaldo began following Topuria on social media.
Discussing the earlier spat on The Ariel Helwani Show, Topuria mentioned that Ronaldo`s initial comments, made backstage with Francis Ngannou, “felt bad”. But the subsequent social media follow changed things. He expressed belief that meeting in person would alter Ronaldo`s perception that he “talks too much”. Topuria suggested Ronaldo`s follow might indicate he now sees him differently.
Looking ahead to his next bout, the undefeated Topuria is expected to compete in the main event of UFC 317 in Las Vegas early Sunday morning. The report indicates he is scheduled to vie for the vacant lightweight title.
Topuria has also declared his confidence in becoming just the tenth fighter in UFC history to hold championships in two different weight classes. He specifically called out former lightweight champion Charles Oliveira, predicting a first-round finish. Topuria described Oliveira as a “great fighter” and a “legendary fighter,” but felt his style, particularly a perceived lack of mobility, makes him a favorable matchup for a knockout.
