Jake Paul has announced his next opponent: Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., moving on from UFC stars and even ‘Iron’ Mike Tyson rumors.
While it`s not the highly anticipated match against Canelo Alvarez, Paul will face a significant name in boxing – Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., a former WBC Middleweight Champion and the son of boxing legend Julio Cesar Chavez.
Chavez Jr. is arguably Paul`s most experienced opponent to date. They are scheduled to fight in a cruiserweight match on June 28th in Anaheim, California, broadcast on DAZN pay-per-view.
This event will see Jake Paul competing directly with the UFC, as UFC 317 pay-per-view is scheduled for the same night, during International Fight Week.
Jake Paul Aims to Make Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. ‘Proud’ with Son`s Defeat
Despite Chavez Jr. being 39 and past his prime, Jake Paul emphasizes the significance of this fight, highlighting the name recognition and his rapid progress in boxing.
“Five years ago, I had my professional boxing debut after just one amateur fight. Every fight since has been a step towards my world championship goal,” Paul stated on Instagram.
“After defeating a formidable opponent and breaking records, I am now facing a former world champion with 54 wins, someone Canelo Alvarez struggled to dominate.”
Canelo Alvarez defeated Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. by unanimous decision in 2017.
“Chávez Jr. is Mexican, but I, El Gallo De Dorado, CAN knock him out.
“On Saturday, June 28, live on DAZN pay-per-view, I will beat Julio and make Chávez Sr. proud in a way his son never has. Viva La Puerto Rico.”
Paul turned pro in 2020, with early wins against YouTuber AnEsonGib and former NBA player Nate Robinson, before moving on to fight former UFC athletes.
Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. Warns Jake Paul: ‘I’m Not a YouTuber or UFC Fighter’
Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.’s recent boxing record has been inconsistent. In 2021, he lost to former UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva, who also fought Jake Paul.
Chavez Sr. had previously urged his son to retire if he wasn`t committed to proper training.
Coming off a victory against Uriah Hall on Paul’s undercard last summer, Chavez Jr. addressed Paul directly.
“Jake Paul – you are not playing boxing!” Cesar Chavez Jr. posted on Instagram.
“I am not some YouTuber or UFC fighter or someone who beats up old retired boxers!
“I am a former Boxing World Champion, and on June 28, you will learn what real Mexican style is all about!! Viva Mexico.”
Jake Paul’s boxing record includes wins against former MMA champions Ben Askren, Tyron Woodley, and Anderson Silva, a legend in the sport.
