Jonjo Shelvey Released by Burnley After Minimal Playtime

Football news

Midfielder Jonjo Shelvey is now without a club after being released by Burnley as part of their post-season roster clearout.

The player, who has six caps for England, signed for the Clarets in January as a free agent, having previously had his contract terminated by Turkish side Eyupspor.

However, the 33-year-old spent only 11 minutes on the pitch for Burnley during his time at the club.

Consequently, the club decided not to extend his contract.

Burnley confirmed his departure in a statement, which also mentioned Jeremy Sarmiento returning to Brighton & Hove Albion and Nathan Redmond also leaving when their contracts expired on June 30th.

The club expressed gratitude to Shelvey, Redmond, and other departing players for their contributions, wishing them success in their future careers.

Shelvey began his professional journey at Charlton Athletic before moving to Liverpool in the summer of 2010.

He spent three years at Anfield, which included a loan spell at Blackpool, before transferring to Swansea City.

He then joined Newcastle United in the summer of 2016, remaining there until 2023.

In January 2023, he signed a two-and-a-half-year contract with Nottingham Forest, but surprisingly left for Caykur Rizespor in September of the same year.

His move to Eyupspor followed in August, where he made only six league appearances in the Turkish Super Lig before his contract was terminated.

On the international stage, Shelvey earned his first England cap in 2012 during a 5-0 victory over San Marino at Wembley.

He went on to make five additional appearances for England in 2015, with his last cap coming in a 2-0 friendly win against France.
