Jordan Henderson’s Short Stint at Ajax Ends as Contract is Terminated

Jordan Henderson`s time at Ajax has concluded unexpectedly quickly. The midfielder and the Dutch club have mutually agreed to terminate his contract prematurely, a decision that sees the England international depart Amsterdam just months after his arrival.

Henderson joined Ajax in January 2024 on a free transfer from Saudi Arabian side Al-Ettifaq, signing a contract that was originally set to run until June 30, 2026. His move was intended to bring seasoned leadership and experience to a side that was undergoing a challenging period in the Eredivisie.

During his brief tenure, Henderson made approximately 22 appearances for the club. While his professional approach and presence were noted, his arrival did not immediately translate into a significant upturn in the team`s fortunes. Despite the collective struggles, Ajax acknowledged Henderson`s contribution off the pitch.

Ajax Director Alex Kroes commented on Henderson`s departure:

Jordan has been a true leader for us, inside and outside the pitch. An international level footballer who has contributed immensely, not only through his efforts but also to the development of the sport culture here. We are grateful to him and wish him the very best for the future.

Henderson himself reflected on his time at the Johan Cruyff Arena:

It was an honour to play for Ajax and an even greater privilege to have been the captain. I want to thank the club and the fans for their welcome and support. Unfortunately, we didn`t win as much as we had hoped, but I am certain that the times of great success will return for the club.

His departure marks a surprisingly short chapter in the career of the former Liverpool captain. While the stated reason for the termination is mutual agreement, it allows Henderson to explore new opportunities potentially more aligned with his immediate career goals, especially with major international tournaments on the horizon.

Henderson is expected to provide further comment on his decision and future plans in due course.
