Liverpool and Newcastle Compete for Chelsea’s Nkunku

Football news

Reports indicate that Liverpool are now interested in signing Chelsea forward Christopher Nkunku, who has struggled since his £52 million move from RB Leipzig in 2023.

However, Liverpool will face competition from domestic rivals Newcastle United and German giants Bayern Munich.

The 27-year-old France international`s time at Chelsea has been plagued by injuries. His arrival followed several knee issues, and disaster struck again in pre-season when he re-injured the same area, requiring surgery. More recently, Nkunku has been unavailable for selection due to a hamstring injury suffered in February.

His limited appearances have resulted in only 17 goals in 56 games for Chelsea. According to Foot Mercato, these struggles mean Nkunku is expected to depart Stamford Bridge this summer.

Despite his difficulties, the adaptable attacker might stay in England`s top flight. Surprisingly, Liverpool, under new manager Arne Slot, are reportedly considering a move for the player. This interest comes as Liverpool potentially look to offload forward Darwin Nunez, and the futures of other attacking players like Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota are also uncertain.

Nkunku`s versatility across the forward line and potential to play in midfield is seen as a valuable asset for Slot`s plans. Should he rediscover the form that saw him score 58 goals in his last two seasons at Leipzig, he could prove to be a shrewd acquisition.

However, Liverpool and Newcastle are not the only clubs monitoring his situation. Bayern Munich previously attempted to sign Nkunku in January without success. With Thomas Muller departing Bayern this summer, there is a void for an attacking player who operates just behind the main striker.

Considering his successful spell at Leipzig and his challenging period at Chelsea, a move back to Germany with Bayern Munich could be Nkunku`s preferred destination.
