Liverpool Clinch Historic 20th League Title, Draw Level with Manchester United

Football news

IT`S OFFICIAL: Liverpool are the champions of the Premier League, equalling Manchester United`s long-standing record of 20 top-flight titles.

In his inaugural season, Arne Slot has successfully guided Liverpool back to the summit of English football, following his takeover from club legend Jurgen Klopp last May.

Following a 1-0 win over Leicester on Sunday, which confirmed their relegation, Liverpool sealed the trophy with a commanding 5-1 victory against Tottenham.

Despite conceding first, they responded just four minutes later and held a 3-1 lead by halftime.

The match was filled with celebratory moments, and at the end of the game, players and staff celebrated joyously in front of the Kop stand.

Mohamed Salah continued taking selfies with the fans, much like he did after scoring his goal, as Anfield celebrated its first league title win with supporters present in 35 years. The previous Premier League title in 2020 was won behind closed doors.

Arne Slot, aged 46, is the first Dutch manager to win the Premier League. He is also the fifth manager to achieve this feat in their debut season, joining Jose Mourinho, Carlo Ancelotti, Manuel Pellegrini, and Antonio Conte.

With four matches still to play, the loyal Kop supporters can now officially revel in their team`s achievement.

However, the Reds had been strong title contenders for several weeks leading up to this.

Arsenal`s challenge faded after drawing three consecutive games against Everton, Brentford, and Palace this month, making it mathematically impossible for them to catch Liverpool.

Mikel Arteta`s team can earn a maximum of 12 more points from their remaining four fixtures, effectively ending their domestic season title hopes.

As it stands, the 15-point lead the league leaders hold over Arsenal is the largest gap between the top two sides since Manchester City finished 18 points ahead of Manchester United in the 2019-2020 season.

However, of greater significance to Manchester United fans is Liverpool drawing level with their long-held record of 20 English top-flight titles.

Sir Alex Ferguson established that record in 2013, culminating two decades of effort to surpass Liverpool`s dominance from the 1980s.

Meanwhile, English football welcomes a new Premier League champion for the first time in five years, since Liverpool previously broke their own 30-year title drought. Pep Guardiola`s remarkable Manchester City teams had won the title for the past four consecutive seasons, setting a new record.

Indeed, it was Jurgen Klopp`s immense effort to challenge Guardiola`s dominance over his nine years at Anfield that reportedly led the German manager to feel “under too much pressure” before he departed last season.

Mohamed Salah, who signed a new two-year contract this month, has been prolific with 46 goal contributions (28 goals and 18 assists), leading the league in both categories.

This season, Liverpool have suffered only two Premier League defeats: a 1-0 loss to Nottingham Forest in September and a 3-2 defeat to Fulham this month.

A champion team hasn`t lost so few games in a season since Manchester City in 2017-2018. To maintain this impressive statistic, Liverpool must remain undefeated in their final four matches against Chelsea, Arsenal, Brighton, and Palace.

Meanwhile, Arsenal, who have recently been City`s main competitors alongside Liverpool, could potentially finish runners-up for the third consecutive season.

This will depend on whether chasing teams like Manchester City, Newcastle, Chelsea, and Nottingham Forest manage to overtake them in the final standings.
