Maria Sakkari Responds to Doubts About Top 10 Return

Sport news

Former world No. 3 Maria Sakkari is expected to drop in the WTA rankings following the Charleston tournament.

In the second round, the Greek player was defeated by Zheng Qinwen with a score of 4-6, 1-6. This loss means she did not defend her semifinal result from the previous year, and she is currently positioned at 81st in the live rankings.

Following the match, Sakkari addressed a comment made on Twitter which stated: `Maria Sakkari will fall out of the Top 80 after her defeat in Charleston… Honestly, it`s difficult to imagine her making a return to the Top 10`.

In response, the tennis player, who had to conclude her season prematurely last October due to a shoulder injury, questioned: `Am I the first or last person to lose ranking points and attempt a comeback after an injury?`
