Nine-time Wimbledon singles champion Martina Navratilova shared her perspective on the leading contenders for the upcoming tournament, naming them after Aryna Sabalenka.
“I would position Coco Gauff as the second favourite,” Navratilova stated. “Exceptional athletes consistently perform brilliantly on grass, and she is arguably the most athletic player in women`s tennis. This should work to her advantage. She`s also riding high after her victory at Roland Garros. The crucial element for her is effectively managing her game, physical state, and emotions. She appears to have found that crucial equilibrium between focus and intensity.”
“Madison Keys seems to have a significant burden lifted after her win in Australia,” she continued. “She possesses the necessary weaponry for grass-court play, which is exactly what`s required here. I see her as the third favourite – following Sabalenka and slightly trailing Gauff.”
The American legend also evaluated the prospects for Iga Swiatek.
“The fact that she strikes the ball exceptionally well gives her a potential edge,” Navratilova commented. “She has an incredibly reliable backhand. Her forehand is quite good, although perhaps not as potent on grass compared to clay. We don`t know the draw yet, but I certainly hope she doesn`t find herself in the same quarter as Sabalenka.”
