Michael Carrick Departs Middlesbrough

Football news

Middlesbrough has announced the sacking of head coach Michael Carrick.

The former Manchester United midfielder was relieved of his duties following a period where the club failed to secure promotion to the Premier League across three campaigns under his leadership.

Carrick, 43, took charge in October 2022, succeeding Chris Wilder. He made an immediate impact, guiding Boro to a commendable fourth-place finish in his first full season at the helm, earning a spot in the play-offs. However, in the two subsequent seasons, disappointing finishes meant Middlesbrough missed out on contention for promotion.

Despite having two years remaining on his contract, the decision to terminate his contract was made after a meeting with club chairman Steve Gibson.

In a concise statement, Middlesbrough confirmed the departure of Carrick and his coaching staff.

“Middlesbrough Football Club has today parted company with head coach Michael Carrick.”

“Michael`s assistants Jonathan Woodgate and Graeme Carrick have also departed the club.”

“We`d like thank Michael, Jonathan, and Graeme for all their hard work and unwavering commitment. We wish them all the very best for the future.”

“The club will be making no further comment at this stage.”

Jonathan Woodgate, 45, is a popular figure locally, having previously managed Boro from 2019 to 2020 and represented England. Graeme Carrick is Michael`s brother and previously worked within the coaching setup at Newcastle United.

During his playing career, Carrick also spent time at Tottenham Hotspur before his long and successful spell at Manchester United.

Expert View

According to a North East Football Reporter and Boro season ticket holder, the sacking was largely anticipated, though perhaps slightly delayed. A key turning point was seen in February with a poor run of results that arguably cost the club a better chance at promotion. Criticism included Carrick`s perceived tactical inflexibility and a lack of a `Plan B`, which made the team predictable. While the loss of key players was acknowledged, the expert felt Carrick`s approach was a significant factor. The reporter believes the change is beneficial for all parties and suggests Steve Cooper could be a suitable candidate to energize the club.

Looking ahead, speculation regarding Carrick`s future has emerged, with pundit Joe Cole suggesting a potential move to his former club Tottenham. For Middlesbrough, the focus turns to finding a replacement, with Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl reportedly the early favourite, closely followed by names like Tom Cleverley and Sean Dyche according to betting odds.
