Oscar De La Hoya risks restarting Dana White beef with ‘doesn’t know boxing’ comment

Boxing news

The relationship between Dana White and Oscar De La Hoya has always been strained, and it seems the tension is escalating.

Having transformed the UFC into a global combat sports powerhouse, Dana White is now venturing into boxing, aiming to revitalize the sport.

Recently, White announced a partnership with Turki Alalshikh to launch `TKO Boxing,` a new boxing league modeled after the UFC`s successful structure.

The UFC president has been hinting at a boxing promotion for years, even establishing Zuffa boxing previously, which has since been dissolved.

Oscar De La Hoya criticizes Dana White`s entry into boxing

While some in the boxing community are enthusiastic about White`s arrival, he has faced criticism from figures like former boxer Pauli Malinaggi.

Furthermore, promoter Eddie Hearn has cautioned White about the demanding nature of boxing, advising him to be constantly vigilant.

Despite Hearn and White having a reasonable rapport, Oscar De La Hoya, another promoter, is notably not a supporter of White.

De La Hoya and White have a history of disagreement and have openly expressed their views about each other. The Golden Boy Boxing promoter has now shared his thoughts on White`s move into boxing.

“Dana White is not knowledgeable about boxing. We`ve seen various individuals enter the sport over the years— promoters, managers, and others—attempting to operate incorrectly and alter boxing,” De La Hoya stated to Fight Hub TV.

“Of course, we all desire boxing to progress, improve, ensure fighters are well-compensated, as fighter compensation is paramount in boxing.”

“Unlike the UFC, it will be intriguing to see how UFC fighters react when boxers earn significantly more. Dana underpays UFC fighters… We can collectively improve boxing,” he added.

Dana White aims to build bridges in boxing

Over the years, White has been a vocal critic of boxing, particularly its promoters and the sport`s evolution.

As he enters this domain, he acknowledges the need to repair relationships he has damaged.

“I`ve been critical of boxing for 25 years, so I have work to do. I need to establish the infrastructure and determine who to hire to build a team, similar to the UFC,” White mentioned at the UFC 313 post-fight press conference.

“There are individuals I respect and those I don`t. I anticipate continuing to respect those I do and dislike those I don`t. If anything, these sentiments will likely intensify,” White concluded.
