UFC featherweight champion Ilia Topuria has expressed a surprising degree of respect for Jake Paul, diverging from the common disdain many UFC fighters hold for the boxer.
Regardless of opinions, Jake Paul has undeniably forged a unique path in boxing, competing against and defeating former UFC stars, internet personalities, and now, professional boxers.
While Paul`s recent bout was against Mike Tyson, who is 58 years old, the event became the most-watched sporting event ever streamed on Netflix, highlighting Paul`s undeniable draw.
Paul`s victory over Tyson attracted a massive audience of 108 million viewers globally.
Looking ahead, Paul, 28, is scheduled to face former WBC Champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. on June 28th in a DAZN pay-per-view event.
Topuria Praises Jake Paul`s Ability to Captivate Audiences
Ilia Topuria, who has headlined his own PPV events against Alexander Volkanovski and Max Holloway, recognizes Paul`s appeal, especially considering Paul was close to securing a fight with Canelo Alvarez.
In contrast to critics like Michael Bisping who often criticize Paul for fighting older opponents and his social media antics, Topuria believes Paul deserves recognition for entering the boxing world and attracting significant viewership.
“You have to respect that,” Topuria stated about Paul on The Full Send Podcast.
“Somehow, he compels you to tune in and watch his fights.”
“You have to give him credit for that,” he added.
Topuria Challenges Jake Paul`s Detractors
Since turning professional in 2020, Paul has faced opponents ranging from YouTuber AnEsonGib and NBA player Nate Robinson to former MMA champions Ben Askren, Tyron Woodley, and Anderson Silva, who was 47 at the time of their fight and is considered an MMA legend.
Despite holding an 11-1 boxing record, Paul continues to face considerable criticism, with many hoping to see him lose.
“Many dismiss him as just a YouTuber,” Topuria noted regarding Paul`s critics.
“But they should try to do what he does.”
“They don`t realize the difficulty of fighting.”
Topuria elaborated:
“On any given Saturday, there are countless entertainment options – concerts, movies, and more. For someone to choose to watch your fight, either at home or in an arena, requires a unique ability to draw attention.”
“He possesses that ability, and that deserves respect,” Topuria concluded, emphasizing Paul`s power to draw viewers.
