Tottenham Manager Ange Postecoglou’s Future Uncertain Despite Europa League Run

Football news

According to recent reports, Ange Postecoglou is expected to leave his position as Tottenham manager this summer, a decision said to be independent of whether the club wins the Europa League.

Spurs are currently enduring a difficult Premier League campaign, sitting in a disappointing 16th place in the table.

Monday night`s 2-1 defeat to Nottingham Forest was their 18th loss of the season, placing them just one defeat away from matching their record of 19 losses from the 2003-04 campaign.

Despite domestic struggles, the season still offers a chance for redemption through the Europa League, where the club could end a 17-year wait for silverware.

Postecoglou`s side recently defeated Eintracht Frankfurt in the quarter-finals, securing a semi-final tie against Norwegian team Bodo/Glimt.

However, reports suggest that lifting the Europa League trophy on May 21 would reportedly not be enough to save the Australian`s job.

The Telegraph claims that Tottenham`s management has already decided to remove Postecoglou, regardless of the outcome in the cup competition.

Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola is reportedly held in high regard by Tottenham officials, but Bournemouth are said to be determined and “optimistic” about keeping him.

Fulham manager Marco Silva is also listed among the potential candidates to take over from Postecoglou.

Mauricio Pochettino, who previously managed Tottenham, has expressed interest in returning, though he is currently preparing to manage the US team at their home World Cup next summer.

Additionally, Spurs technical director Johan Lange is reportedly an admirer of Brentford manager Thomas Frank.

These reports surface amidst news that chief football officer Scott Munn, described as a “key ally and biggest supporter” of Postecoglou, is also expected to be sacked.

Before the match against Eintracht Frankfurt, Postecoglou addressed questions about his future, stating openly that he had “got no idea” whether he would remain at Spurs for the following season.

He commented: “You either think I’m capable of doing the job now or you don’t. That’s where I sit with these things.”

Postecoglou added: “If people think that us winning tomorrow all of a sudden makes me a better manager than what I am today or us losing tomorrow somehow makes me a worse manager, I guess that’s their burden, not mine.”

“I don’t think that way and I don’t think most people think that way. Or I’d like to think they don’t, in terms of their own sort of self esteem and who they are as people,” he continued.

Emphasizing his focus, he stated: “I couldn’t care less. Really. I couldn’t care less.”

“There’s no burden on me, there’s no anxiety on me. What I’m sitting here doing is thinking we’ve got a great opportunity to get to the final four of a major tournament,” Postecoglou said.

He concluded: “Mate, I’m not going to let that slip by without fighting tooth and nail for it irrespective of what may come the day after.”
