Golf legends Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy have teamed up to introduce a groundbreaking experience for golf enthusiasts: TGL, a technology-driven, interactive golf league.

In collaboration with the PGA Tour, TGL offers a unique and intimate viewing experience, bringing fans closer to the action as teams of elite golfers compete in a custom-designed, state-of-the-art arena.

Understanding TGL Golf

Launched in August 2022, TGL, short for Tomorrow`s Golf League, is a dynamic 3-on-3 golf league. Six teams, each composed of four PGA Tour players, engage in fast-paced, two-hour matches at the SoFi Center in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.

The Meaning Behind TGL

TGL represents Tomorrow`s Golf League, a name inspired by TMRW Sports. This venture, founded by Woods, McIlroy, and former NBC golf executive Mike McCarley, is dedicated to developing technology-focused initiatives within sports and entertainment.

How TGL Matches Unfold

Each TGL match is divided into two segments. The first session, known as “triples,” features a nine-hole, 3-on-3 alternate shot format. The second session shifts to “singles,” with head-to-head play over six holes, each golfer playing two holes.

  • The SoFi Center course is a technological marvel, spanning roughly 97 by 50 yards, about the size of a football field.
  • Golfers tee off from real grass and play from authentic fairway, rough, and sand surfaces, hitting towards a massive simulation screen, over 20 times larger than a standard golf simulator.
  • The high-tech green incorporates jacks that dynamically alter the slope, adding variety to each hole.
  • Each hole is worth one point. In case of a tie after regulation, overtime decides the winner.
  • Overtime in TGL mirrors a penalty shootout in soccer. Players compete head-to-head until one team gets two shots closer to the pin than their opponents.
  • A 40-second shot clock is enforced, based on USGA recommendations for pace of play. Exceeding this time results in a one-stroke penalty.
  • Each team has four timeouts per match, two per session. Timeouts from the first session don`t carry over. Timeouts can be called until the shot clock expires for the team playing, or until the opposing player addresses the ball for the opposing team. No back-to-back timeouts are allowed on the same shot.
  • A referee oversees the course to ensure rule adherence, with an additional official monitoring from a booth.
  • For an immersive fan experience, all golfers wear microphones during matches.

TGL events are strategically scheduled to complement the PGA Tour calendar, as part of their partnership. Weekly matches build towards playoffs, culminating in one team being awarded the SoFi Cup.

TGL Points System

Adopting a system similar to the NHL, TGL uses points for regular-season matches. Each match offers up to two points, which determine standings for the SoFi Cup.

A win in regulation or overtime grants two points, while an overtime loss earns one point.

The top four teams proceed to single-elimination semifinals and a best-of-three championship series.
