The world of Mixed Martial Arts is in mourning after the untimely death of Jake Sendler, a 21-year-old fighter. He passed away due to complications from a muscle condition he was unaware he had.
Following a match in Melbourne on March 3rd, Sendler was urgently hospitalized and placed in a medically induced coma. Despite medical intervention, he could not recover.

It was later discovered that Sendler was suffering from rhabdomyolysis, a dangerous condition where muscle tissue breaks down due to excessive strain, pre-existing health issues, or physical trauma. This breakdown releases harmful substances into the bloodstream, which can lead to kidney failure.
Reports suggest Sendler was attempting a drastic weight cut before his last fight.
An insider from the fight community mentioned to the Herald Sun that Sendler had expressed needing to lose a significant 5-6 kilograms just two days before the fight. For someone typically weighing around 75kg, this was an extreme weight loss attempt in a very short period.
Sharone, Jake’s mother, remembered her son as a “warrior” after his heartbreaking passing.
“Jake was a true warrior, an exceptional young man. He would never want anyone else to experience this,” she stated.
“Our message is to be aware of your body’s signals, but never stop striving for greatness and pursuing your dreams.”
Sharone revealed that Jake had experienced muscle pain and dark urine leading up to his final fight, both telltale signs of rhabdomyolysis. She explained that Jake attributed these symptoms to his rigorous training regime.
“He entered the ring and fought with everything he had, even though his body was already struggling,” she added.
“We now understand that his body was already failing, with his kidneys functioning at only 40 percent. Yet, he bravely completed all three rounds of the fight.”
A GoFundMe campaign has been established to support Sendler`s family with funeral expenses and to raise awareness about rhabdomyolysis.
A message on the fundraising page from his loved ones reads: “It is with deep sorrow that we announce Jake’s passing. Jake was not just a fighter in MMA, but a true warrior in every aspect of life.”
“He was a devoted athlete, a caring coach, a cherished son, brother, and friend. Jake’s generous spirit, endless energy, and unwavering support touched countless lives.”
“Whether he was training with his team, enjoying nature, fishing, or relaxing at the beach, Jake’s infectious optimism lifted everyone around him. He dedicated himself to others selflessly, embodying both strength and kindness.”
“Unbeknownst to Jake, he was battling rhabdomyolysis (“rhabdo”), a dangerous condition caused by extreme muscle damage, releasing harmful toxins into the body.”
“While preparing for a fight, Jake unknowingly ignored worsening symptoms. He continued training, working, and coaching, unaware his body was shutting down.”
“Incredibly, even as his organs were failing, Jake stepped into the ring for one last fight, displaying remarkable courage and resilience.”
“Immediately after, his condition rapidly worsened, leading to emergency hospitalization and multiple organ failure—the most severe case of rhabdo doctors had ever seen.”
“Despite extraordinary medical efforts, including numerous surgeries and blood transfusions, Jake passed away after days of an incredible fight. While his physical body gave out, his indomitable spirit will live on forever.”
